Auction script recommendations

Recommendations for auction scripts/sites?

I'm looking at options to hold a fundraising auction online and need some advice picking among a general auction site like ebay, some other site, or running a script on my own site. Especially: if anyone has experience with the myriad PHP or Perl scripts out there, do you have any specific recommendations?

Background: this is a one-time auction for a small not-for-profit (but not registered nonprofit or charity) arts group to raise money to travel overseas next year. Our audience will be a specific community that we'll ask both for items to auction and to bid on stuff. I'm not averse to paying for something, but obviously as it's a one-time-only thing, I don't want anything expensive.

With limited experience, I think you may want to settle on setting up with a third party such as eBay/paypal. This will provide the easiest path to ensure the auctions are honored and the funds are received. It'll cost, but reasonably...and you'll save yourself the challenge of getting an auction solution running from scratch.
