Where should we stay during our Labor Day visit to NYC/NJ?

We are traveling to NYC/NJ for Labor Day weekend, arriving Fri, leaving Mon flying to/from LGA. The reason for the trip is to attend my sister's pre-wedding events near Paramus, New Jersey. We will need to be there Sat 2-6ish and Sunday 3-7. Otherwise we want to be tourists in NYC. I haven't been there in 10yrs and my husband has never visited.

I am trying to figure out where is best to stay. NYC or NJ? NYC because it would be great to be in the city and seems like we would get to see more/have more time. But it so much cheaper (60/night on Hotwire) to stay in New Jersey and we will already be there two of the four days we are in the area. Are there hotels in NJ that you can recommend that will be convenient to the city and Paramus? Are there hotels that we could get for less than 150/night in NYC (I am not really seeing anything near price, so possibly I am being completely unreasonable).

What do you recommend, balancing cost with convenience?

Also, if you think NJ is the way to go, can you give me some resources for figuring out the public transport and tips for determining what cities or hotels in NJ will make it easy for us to get over to the city?

Is a shared bathroom OK?

Will you need to use public transport to go to Paramus or will you have a car on those days? I only ask because parts of that area of NJ are almost easier to get to from the city than from other parts of NJ.

If a shared bathroom is OK, you can find a hotel in NYC for less than 150. Try the Pod Hotel or Hotel 17. I've stayed at those and they were OK -- not great, but you get what you pay for. There are others too -- I've heard the Larchmont Hotel is good.

The NJ Transit 168 bus goes from Port Authority to Paramus (takes 1.5 hours), so it might be a bigger pain to stay in Jersey because you're looking at maybe 3 hours on a bus to play in the city (and after having fun, the thought of that bus ride back to a Jersey hotel could be kind of blah).

If you rent a car, parking in the city can be a pain, so I'd avoid that.

I think your best best is to stay in the city and see if you can get someone to drive you to the Fort Lee Bridge Plaza (maybe 15 minutes from Paramus by car) when you're done with wedding things, that way you can hop any bus over the GW bridge and then take the subway straight into Manhattan and have fun there.

I've gotten good deals with Priceline's name your own price.

Response by poster: Shared bath is okay. No car planned, but I guess it's possible we could rent one if that is the best idea.

Response by poster: Larchmont looks great. Unfortunately they only have a room for the Sunday night. Any other suggestions similar to the Larchmont?

Response by poster: We ended up booking a room at The Jane Hotel. I'll post back with how it goes after the trip.
