Can't pretend that gettin' older never hurts

Arghh! Your 15-point pop-up question: Looking for a copy of Pete Townshend's Slit Skirts - not the studio version on the All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes album, but the one on the video they showed on MTV back in the early 80s with the Harmonica player....

The version I'm looking for is the one discussed on Wikipedia and as appears, although in tinny audio, on YouTube here and on Last fm here. The Amazon link to purchase on the Last fm page is to the album studio versio without the harmonica. NME lists the musicians on the version I want (Peter Hope-Evans on harmonica), but again the music link on their page is to the studio version.

Any help out there? I'd really like a copy with the harmonica...

Regards.

Hmmm.... I do like that era of his music a lot, but I'm not sure I've heard that version before. That said, here is some speculation:

There was a video cassette issued with videos for several of the tracks from "All the best cowboys..." I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out they used different recordings of the songs to make the videos. I actually own this tape, unfortunately it's on Beta(!) and I have no way to play it. So I can't confirm this theory for sure, and if it's true I'm not sure how you'd get a good audio rip anyway. But that is the only place I can think of this mystery version being from- the track isn't on any of his "Scoop" compilations, and I'm 99% sure the version on the "Cool Walkin'..." greatest hits album is the same as the one on the original album (no harmonica).

Response by poster: Yeah, if you look at the Wikipedia article it mentions the video, no longer available - and I just want the one song, so aren't to hot on hunting it up for purchase. If you're not familiar with it, the youtube/last fm versions I linked, while not high fidelity, will give you an idea. It was the version that they always played on MTV at the time.....

The video you link to was the 'official' video for the song. It was never released. Are you sure Peter Hope-Evans wasnt on the album version, just mixed lower?

I am definitely expert in that era Townshend and I was very obsessed with that song for a while but don't know of any alternate versions. Go over to the Odds & Sods list, for loonies more expert than I.

Response by poster: If Hope-Evans was on the original album version it was mixed so low as to be indistinguishable and, as you & the Wiki article indicate, the harmonica was on the video version, so what I suppose I'm really looking for is someone who has a decent audio rip from the videotape, as it would seem the alternative version never made an outakes album.

Response by poster: That & the youtube versions audio is crappy, to say the least......

That video looks and sounds like it was recorded live in the studio.

"A companion video was also released, featuring concept videos set to the musical backings of "Prelude", "Face Dances, Pt. 2", "Communication", "Uniforms", "Stardom In Acton", "Exquisitely Bored", and a re-recorded version of "Slit Skirts", with a harmonica performance on the last song that wasn't used on the studio cut. This video has been out of print for years, though Pete Townshend put the videos up on his website in 2000, which were then subsequently uploaded to other video websites on the Internet." (via)
