I need honey recipes + songs for my honey-themed dinner party.
July 6, 2010 12:49 PM   Subscribe

I'm having a thematic dinner party for 12 in honor of Don't Step On A Bee Day (July 10.) The theme is honey. I think I'm going to make BBQ honey chicken for dinner -- and carve up honeydew, too. But if you have any honey-themed recipes that are amazing -- or know of any honey/bee songs to play during dinner, please share them here.

Any honey drink recipes to die for? Desserts? Songs? Finger foods? Side dishes? Place cards? Puns?

Thank you in advance.

My buddy made grilled figs stuffed with goat cheese and drizzled with honey at a bbq this weekend. They were amazing.

Anything made with truffled honey is also a-ok in my book.

Challah and honey? Serve honey cake (recipe in the Cake Bible). Honey goes well with pears and goat cheese.

Tori Amos, "Sweet the Sting", or her whole The Beekeeper album.

A beekeeping friend of mine keeps a pretty good blog. She posted a tasty looking menu for a honey-tasting party a while back.

Also I think I'd prefer my cocktail to come with an epipen swizzle stick.

Get some mead!

This chutney recipe looks good.

Some music:
"Don't Call Me Baby" by Voice of the Beehive
"Honey Bee (Let's Fly To Mars)" by Grinderman
"Money Honey" by Lady GaGa
"Little Toy Gun" by honeyhoney
"Honey Don't" as performed by Joe Walsh & Steve Earle

You should also look into playing some music by Queen, Sting, and The Hives.

Don't forget to have a bowl full of Bit-O-Honey.

It's practically the same thing as mead, but I prefer Ethiopian tej.

Here's a song about honey (Erykah Badu) (The video is a little dumb but the song is pretty catchy)

You could play the excellent video of Menomena's Evil Bee.

And Monty Python's Eric the Half a Bee.

Both U2 and Van Morrison have (different) songs called "Wild Honey."

Maybe a Paul Newman honey-mustard dressing?

"Honeybee" by Bif Naked.
"Honeybee" by Tom Petty. (Not the same song.)

Love the idea of baklava. If you can find a bunch of different honeys (wildflower, lavender, orange blossom, etc.) that might be fun to taste-test, too.

Creamed honey would be a nice appetizer, to dip into or spread on little crackers or bread pieces. Mini PB & honey sandwiches would be a yummy appetizer.

Honey Cumin Salad Dressing

-Honey, to taste for sweetness
-Powdered Cumin- as much as you like
-Some nice vinegar (apple cider or white wine)
-Oil (sunflower or olive)
-A smidge of lemon juice and a bit of salt
- shake in a jar to mix well.

This is a dressing I fell in love with at a local restaurant and have made a bastardized version of with reasonable success. The restaurant generally makes fantastic sauces and dressings (like mole negro, and a chipotle apple cider bbq sauce). It's always been a vague scheme of mine to seduce the chef and learn his secrets.

Also, the song Bees by Caribou is a pretty sweet song - mostly instrumental though.

Drizzle some honey (or use honeycomb) on Humboldt Fog cheese, as an appetizer.

For music, how about "Flight of the Bumblebee" and "Little Black Rain Cloud"?

Honey mustard salad dressing or sauce, which of course go with all kinds of things.

Honey wheat rolls.

I was surprised when I went looking for teriyaki burger recipes that the teriyaki sauce tended to be made with honey. (and it was good, too)

Julienne carrots. Place carrots in tinfoil package with fresh rosemary, drizzle with honey. Seal tinfoil package then BBQ 15-20 minutes on medium flipping package once.

Oh, some songs I can think of offhand: 1000 Bees - Sarah Lov; Beestung - Kristin Hersh.

Here's a glaze I use on pork ribs or chicken when BBQing - it's very good on babybacks or country style ribs.

Glaze: 2 oz sesame oil, 1 oz mirin, 3 oz sriracha, 2 oz ketchup, 6 oz honey.

Rub: 1 tblsp salt, 1 tblsp white pepper, 2 tsp gran. Garlic, 2 tsp onion powder, 2 tsp roasted sesame seeds, 2 tsp. Ground Ginger.

Apply rub to meat. Smoke for 30 minutes to an hour to let the rub set, then begin applying thin coats of glaze every 15 minutes.

If you're grilling, apply your rub and grill normally, and apply glaze 5 minutes before taking off the grill.

Apparently Season 3 episode 17 of Iron Chef America features honey but I can't seem to find any specific recipes.

Also, for a song: Fiona Apple's "Slow Like Honey"

Honey butter (which is simply honey & butter mixed together). Of course, if you already have some sort of honey bread product, honey butter might be overkill.

There are plenty of beehive cakes on Google Images but none as spectacular as the one I cut out of ? magazine yonks ago. Pound cake baked in a terracotta flower pot, etc with the frosting (1.5 lbs butter, 1.5 cups honey, 3 egg yolks piped around using an open star tip) dotted with marzipan bees but what really makes it is hollowing out the inside of the cake and filling it with berries.

I was wrong earlier. The Van Morrison song isn't "Wild Honey." It's "Tupelo Honey." This occurred to me earlier tonight during dinner, when I reached for the honey.

Honey, fresh ginger, banana, and corn syrup make a fantastic sauce for ice cream (vanilla or chocolate chip works well). Just heat the honey and corn syrup (more honey than corn syrup, the corn syrup is to make it a little less heavy), crush fresh ginger and let it simmer in there for a bit, then run it through a sieve, and run in a blender with banana. You might add a bit of water if it's too thick. Serve warm to hot over ice cream.

Sorry I don't have the exact proportions, I usually just improvise, and within reason, no proportions are exactly wrong.

I can't believe no one's recommended the They Might Be Giants song Birdhouse In Your Soul.

Part of the chorus is "Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet...make a little birdhouse in your soul"
