Moviefilter: 1980s artsy life-affirming beachy

Weird movie from vague memory filter: 1980sish, italo disco, beach, beautiful-life-before-dying-young, English people (?), flowing-but-architectural white clothes, colorful flags and streamers, sweeping shots...

Ok so I remember watching bits of a movie on TV in, like, the the early 1990s. I think the movie itself was older, maybe from the mid- to late 1980s. I don't remember much of the plot, but it seemed to involved a Benettonish collection of people celebrating life on the beach in vaguely futuristic clothes knowing that someone among them-- perhaps the most beautiful spirit-- was dying. There was music that sounded like that in The Neverending Story. It was all very artsy.

Did I imagine this? Anyone got any ideas?

Any chance that a young Liv Tyler was in it?

8 1/2?

Response by poster: definitely not 8 1/2. In color, and definitely 1980s with a music video feel to it.

Liv MIGHT have been in it, but it definitely wasn't Stealing Beauty. Again, has more of an 80s feel. People were dressed like Gordon Gecko's wife in Wall Street meets Zanadu.

There may have also been sailboats?
Oh man, was this a dream? ;)

I'm sure it can't be either of these, because you'd have said something about floating heads or diving and not sailboats if it was either Zardoz or The Big Blue. The sailboats is throwing me.

Was it Tempest with Susan Sarandon, Molly Ringwald and John Cassavetes? It came out in the early 1980. Set on an island, lots of pretty people, pretty beaches and a pretty artsy take on Shakespeare's Tempest.

Response by poster: These are getting closer... It's brighter than Zardos, less under water than The Big Blue. Watched some clips online from The Tempest and I don't *think* it's it...

Maybe "Joanna" from 1970? Beach scene, streamers, beautiful people, one of them dying ....

The description doesn't quite fit, but the beach, white clothes, sweeping views and British people make me think Chariots of Fire.
