MeFi, Help me name that game I played over 10 years ago!

About 10 years ago I went to Shanghai and played this game on a game console. I believe the console was like a rip off of a NES or SNES? I'm leaning towards the NES because I recently found out that one of the games that I also didn't know the name of was Battle City, which was only known to me at that time as "Tank." I also remember playing super mario bros. on it too.

Anyways, the game that I don't know the name of, went like this.

It was a platforming game that could have 2 players playing simultaneously at the same time. One player would be blue, another one be red/pink. I also remember being able to steal lives from the other player once I ran out of lives. I can't remember anything about powerups but I remember one of the bosses was like...a caterpillar thing that you had to kill in pieces. It also may have taken place in a futuristic setting...my memory is a bit fuzzy on that.

Does anyone know the name of this game?

The stealing lives thing sounds like Contra, but I have a hard time believing anyone would have forgotten Contra.

Here's a wiki article about Contra for you, apparently also called Gryzor.

Life Force. Like Contra, made by Konami, but the caterpillar thing makes me think it's Life Force

The caterpillar makes me think of Space Harrier, but that seems like a stretch.

do you have any more info? Were you playing as a human-looking thing? Some sort of ship?

Life Force does ring a bell, but if i recall, your 'avatar' was a space ship. It could have been Abbadox, similar to life force as well.

The red and blue motif was done by pretty much any NES game that had multi-player options.

Maybe you're thinking of Gunstar Heroes, a Genesis game that was like a more cartoony version of Contra?

What perspective is it? Side, top, etc.

Blue and pink? Blue and pink rivalry sounds like Nuts and Milk (included, I believe, along with Battle City in the "Super Joy III" Nintendos in faux Nintendo 64 controllers that they used to sell at mall kiosks), though it's not 2-player simultaneous.

Cooperative gameplay with light optional rivalry and a caterpillar boss sounds like Rescue Rangers.
