Shekou out!

Looking for recent feedback and tips on living in Shekou, China. We're transferring there with my company, they'll take care of the relocation, visas etc. so more general feedback on living conditions and things you wish you'd known/taken with you before arriving. I've seen the 2 Ask MeFi questions on Shekou & Shenzhen, does anyone have more up to date information?
What we're particularly interested in knowing are:
- Good areas to live
- Communications with the rest of China & Hong Kong (ferries etc.)
- Good websites for information
- Restaurants
- Things to do/see
- Things to watch out for
Most important are pet relocation services and info on quarantine and veterinarians for our 2 year old cat Ticky (mandatory photos here). We're planning on employing an agent to help negotiate the importation paperwork, so any recommendations would be appreciated.
We're moving from Houston, TX. 2 of us, plus Ticky, British/Canadian Caucasian/Chinese (although Mrs. arcticseal was born in Malaysia, she speaks some Cantonese and virtually no Mandarin), minor concern that she might get hassled for not speaking Mandarin, but plans to take classes.
Mrs. arcticseal is also TEFL (Cambridge) trained and has worked for the past few years in international schools so would be interested if anyone knows of good contacts.
