Non-shady maid service in LA?

Can anyone recommend non-profit or even just non-shady house cleaning in Los Angeles?

When I lived in San Francisco, I used the wonderful Self Help For the Elderly for house cleaning services. They're a non-profit who pay a very high proportion of fees to their workers, while retaining the benefits of an agency (the folks are vetted, can call in sick, etc). I'd like to find a similar organization in LA to clean my home bi-weekly in Silver Lake. Can anyone recommend anyone? I'd even take a recommendation for a solo contractor, I really just don't want to pay some maid agency $25 an hour when they're paying the person doing the work $7.

I don't have an agency to suggest, but perhaps you could hire a freelancer. That way the cleaner gets all the money you pay him or her, and you'll always get the same person, whom you can vett and get to know in order to be sure that he or she is trustworthy.

Bummer not more answers....I don't live in LA, but I've heard that Yelp is a good place to find local housecleaners, you can at least read reviews first, find out about rates, etc. If I ever get it together myself, I think it's what I'm going to use in Seattle to find someone (I can't bring myself to pay for Angie's List).
