Bookfilter: cult of the super mechanics

Help me identify this book or short story: A man accidentally creates a cult of super-mechanics when he recruits a native tribe to help him fix his plane. They mix religion and an obsession with mechanical detail. I might have seen this on MeFi, but I can't find it.

I'm thinking maybe it was in the Sahara, or on the Arabian peninsula, but I'm not sure.

Best answer: Nevil Shute's, Round the Bend, I reckon.

I believe ijsbrand has got it, tho my dim recollections from 30 years ago are that 'Bend' is a religious allegory.
