Can you tell me how to get to Gothenburg?

Travel Filter - Santa Barbara - Gothenburg, Sweden - Detroit - Santa Barbara. Suggestions?

I live in Santa Barbara. I have 2 conferences: one in Gothenburg, Sweden and another in East Lansing, Michigan, a week apart. (But I want to fly into Detroit, as my parents live there.)

Suggestions for getting to Gothenburg? Is there a secret like "Oh, just get a cheap flight to European city X and then you can hop on Cheap Ass airline Y/Train Z to get to Gothenburg."

Thanks!

What are the dates of your conferences? Will you be paying for your flights?

Not likely 'cheap flight' and all that. The easiest connection between Detroit and Gothenburg Landvetter is via Amsterdam. KLM - I'm seeing now that they cooperate with Delta on this connection (thought it was Northwest for some reason).
(I also remember that I once changed planes in Copenhagen; I think it was SAS for both legs of the flight, but when I checked now, I couldn't find any such thing.)
It ain't cheap. You might, however, get a better deal to Stockholm or to Copenhagen, and take the train from there, but that's a bunch of hours extra and trains cost money too, of course.
The cheapo Gothenburg airport (Säve airport) is operated by Ryanair, Air Berlin and some others; you could try to fly to London, get yourself to Stansted and take Ryanair to Gothenburg Säve from there, but it's unlikely worth the hassle.

There are several $57 SAS flights from Copenhagen to Gothenburg every day. Not sure if you consider Boston or New York close enough to Detroit ($112 one-way flight), but Icelandair has very cheap flights to Copenhagen – less than $500 if your dates are a bit flexible.

I don't know if Santa Barbara has got relatively big international airport but there are many flights fly directly from Copenhagen to say, NewYork. If you manage to get to Copenhagen, you could take a bus directly from Kastrup airport to Göteborg central bus terminal. It takes 5 hours for a direct bus or take a train, takes about 3 and half hours, costs almost double the bus i.e. abt USD 50.

One more alternative is, cross the bridge to Malmö by bus and take a bus or train afterwards, could be little cheaper.

Copenhagen = Köbenhavn
Gothenberg = Göteborg

Hope this helps.
