How do I connect wirelessly to my external harddrive?

Help me connect wirelessly to my external hard drive!

We have a 1TB external usb hard drive and an airport base station wireless router (with a usb slot in the back). I'd like for our two laptops- a PC laptop running Vista and an Airbook running OSX- to be able to connect to it without physically plugging it in to the laptops themselves. What do I need to do to make this happen?

A computer to plug the USB drive into? Unless it is part of a NAS or SAN array a hard drive needs more than plugging into a USB port of a router.

Apparently I hit submit to early. I am proved wrong here. So if you have the extreme you are good to go. Looks pretty self explanatory in the article.

Best answer: I don't really understand the question. Plug the drive into the Airport and run the Airport Configuration Utility. Follow the instructions.

Response by poster: The hard drive is plugged into the base station via usb. I can see the drive in Airport on my PC; my friend can see it in hers on her mac, too. But neither of us can actually access it at all- it doesn't show up anywhere on her desktop; I can see it in network, but it tells me it's not accessible, i might not have permission and that it's not ready.

I know this should be just about as simple as plugging a usb drive straight into my computer.. sorry if it seems like too basic of a question... but argh! what's going wrong?!

Have you rebooted your systems since you hooked the USB drive up to the base station? When you hot-swap networked peripherals, your system often needs to reboot to get full access to them.
