ipod backup with playlists?

I am about to backup my ipod on my mac and want to do two things: first, preserve my playlists and, second, merge tracks on certain compilations and mix-cd's I also need to use my ipod on both mac + pc, and use it for data storage, so I know I'm off the prescribed path. Is there an app for this? :-)

Re #1: In the past I've used the free apps to just backup everything into one big folder. I now have around 60GB of music and have taken the time to organize it the way I want via a number of playlists... I don't want to have to do that again.

Re #2: should I just burn to a CD-RW and then re-import w/ the "join" feature selected? Or are those merge apps worth the money?

The free ones suck and made me sad. I had good experience with this using iRip. Very nice playlist import, though if I remember right, my "smart playlists" got imported as plain playlists. But it preserved my metadata and playlists.

As far as joining, and optimizing I've not found a great solution for that.
