Help me have fun at the Salton Sea.

What should I do at the Salton Sea for one or two days? I've checked out this previous post, but need more specifics on this area itself.

I'm going with my girlfriend. The kind of thing I'm looking for:

* Is there a good inexpensive hotel in the area or do I have to head back to Joshua Tree for that?

* Are there specific hikes or sites to see?

* Anything weird I need to check out? Old enclaves of weirdos or something?

* Are there destinations, or is it more of an "arrive at the lake and park your car and maybe camp and check out some birds" type of place.

I've never been, and hence have no idea what to expect.

it is more of an "arrive at the lake and park your car and maybe camp and check out some birds" type of place. i don't know about hotels, you may just want to head back to joshua tree. the area is kind of dead, business wise.

i don't think you need 2 days? you can go around and look for abandoned structures and stuff but we had trouble finding them. we also went at a time of year where it was too hot outside for it to be bearable for us to run around outside for long, though.

Yeah it's going to be really really hot.

I camped the one night I was there.

Lots of birds to see if that's what you like, but the hiking paths (they just go along the shore) were closed.

There is a small park at the south end, sonny bono reserve or something... I didnt make it there while it was open, but you could check that out.

Old enclave of weirdos:
Slab City
Salvation Mountain
Salvation Mountain is totally worth it. The previous thread mentions the Integratron and it's worth mentioning again. My whole family stopped for a sound bath and it was super awesome and werid.

It's great for taking pictures. There are many abandoned houses, trailers, businesses. All kinds of interesting detritus washed up on shore. And the "water" is a unique...texture.

Be prepared for the smell. It is not a pleasant smell...we had to leave after an hour.

It looks like a community center and museum just opened 3 weeks ago.

I've heard great things about mecca canyon AKA ladder canyon hike. It's a fun slot canyon with lot's of ladders someone put up ages ago that you can explore. It's about 5 miles long. See http://www.johnandkristie.com/archives/2006/06/ladder_canyon.html for some images. I don't know if it has hike locations on that site, but you can google mecca canyon or ladder canyon salton sea for directions.
