Help us fix our softball field!

We're finally getting our act together and doing some maintenance work on our recreational softball field. Help me pick the right dirt/clay to invest everyone's money in!

We have a nice field for our weekend pick-up games, but over the years the ditches on the pitcher's mound and in the batter's box have become more and more of a nuisance. The field is by the beach, so when it rains and puddles form, we have a bad habit of filling in the holes with sand -- a very temporary solution that has made the batter's box somewhat more dangerous.

We're ready to take matters into our own hands and purchase some real softball field dirt to even out the ruts and even (gasp!) turn the pitcher's ditch into a pitcher's mound. Google seems to have a lot of suggestions and sales pitches -- any advice from someone who's done it? I assume we want some clay, but I'm not sure how high of a ratio to go for...

I once went to coburgh to play competitive softball and was very impressed by the red clay. I believe I heard it was imported from Arizona. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

The clay allows for you to slide without worrying about ripping up your shins/knees. (or stomach/arms if you prefer to slide head first) Gravel tends to destroy the base runner. Not sure what effect sand would have with the clay.
