Oh god, this is right on the tip of my brain. I'm pretty sure it's the Tool video where Maynard is chanting kind of sotto voce in the beginning under the bass intro.

Looking for this, I realized what a shame it was that so few of the video segments (easily the best part of B&B) are available, there's maybe a dozen on each of the two DVD sets, and it's a fairly random selection.

I can't remember either, but I'll add that I'm pretty sure he also said, "uhh...numbers....words...", etc.

Yeah I know for sure this exists.

I almost feel like they were going over some kind of contract or agreement they had been offered, in one of the "action" sequences.

I realized what a shame it was that so few of the video segments (easily the best part of B&B) are available,
Amen, brotha! I'm sure it is a music-rights thing. Somewhere I have a VHS tape of episodes taped right off MTV that I need to digitize before it's too late.

There were a couple. I remember once when they were in a power plant (maybe in the movie?) and Butthead couldn't bother reading warnings before pressing a button.

Response by poster: Oktober - hmmm it's not Sober or Prison Sex....

Selton - nope not in the Candy ep...

I don't thINK it's from the movie.. at least, a search of the script has no hit on "word" or "words", for full or partial word segments..

still lookin! Thanks for the tips so far.

Might be the once where Beavis is choking and Butthead goes to Burger World to get a sign detailing the Heimlich maneuver.

Disregard that, watching the beginning of that episode it's Butthead who is choking, and it's definitely Butthead who's got the 'words, words" line.

Yes, it's Butthead. I don't remember the rest of the episode, but I remember the gag. They're handed a piece of paper, a contract or something, possibly even a newspaper, something with a lot of text, and Butthead looks at it intently, saying, "Words... words..." and he's not making fun of it, he's just too lazy to read it. Or not able to.

I make that joke myself to this day, in Butthead's voice, as an offline tl;dr. Nobody ever gets it.

Response by poster: Devoidoid - this is why I sooooo want to find a clip of it. ; )

Jawn - watched the Choke episode - good guess, but nada.

I thought it was one of the one's when they were working at Burger World, and Butt-Head is searching for the correct button to place the order on the cash register.

In "Beard Boys," Butthead reads the label on a tube of glue as "uh... words... uh... words... huh huh huh, it says 'use on wood.'" BUT! That's not during a music video.

The rest of the class had piled on the bus and left school for a field trip.

Beavis and Butthead were tardy for some reason or another, and arrived to an empty classroom. On the chalk-board, in giant letters, it said FIELDTRIP and some other details. Butthead points to the words, as though sounding them out, and says "Uh . . . words. . ."

I think . . .

Devoidoid, we use it exactly the same way, only we say "words.... uh... words... thingies...."

Now, I don't know if we actually heard an original version with "words" + "thingies", or just mentally made that up... but if we did hear it accurately, lo a decade ago, maybe the added "thingies" search will help?

"Thingies" is their word for breasts, I think. I remember a lot of thingies jokes around the same time.

Best answer: The "Beard Boys" bit is from 1:57 to 2:05 here, is that it?

Some part of me feels like they were watching either the video for "Right Now" or "Everybody Hurts," though I haven't checked out that timing.

Sidebar: I too have used this phrase, in the voice, for most of my adult life. I feel like the "Bee-girl" at the end of the "No Rain" video!

I'm (possibly mis-)remembering something like that from their take on The Pursuit of Happiness's "Cigarette Dangles," which IIRC had a bunch of text on screen.

Also, if you want to see the episodes in their original format, I believe there's a large number of unofficial fan edits (available on your favorite internet grey-area distribution channels) complete with "B&B watching videos" segments.

Response by poster: The Beard Boys bit sounds just like it, although I always remembered him doing it for a little longer than that. Thanks!

Didn't Shakespare use this joke in "Hamlet"? It would be ... heh heh... cool... if Beavis and Butthead made an allusion to that.

Sort of. Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2:

Polonius: [...] What do you read my lord?
Hamlet: Words, words, words.

Damn, now when I read Hamlet I will always hear it in Butthead's voice.
