The way to (dinner) in San Jose

Need restaurant suggestions for dinner in San Jose, California.

I'm on the board of a small non-profit and we need to have a couple of dinner meetings in San Jose, mostly for reasons of geography- it's fairly in the middle of where everyone will be coming from, but none of us live there. We are a group of 5-6 people. We are looking for places in San Jose proper, not the greater SV area.

We need a place with reasonably good food, but not high-end fancy. A reasonably quiet dining room so that we can hear each other. The first dinner we will be hosting a member of the Assembly from another part of the state, and the second dinner is likely to go rather long, like three hours. There is no need to have both meetings at the same restaurant. Someplace with a small private room or some other space where they won't mind if we stay there for hours would be ideal.

We have one person who eats no meat, only fish, but other than that no dietary requirements.

Where to meet?

There is your usual set of Gordon Biersch and other chains in San Jose including a sort of fun chain (Flames) which is a diner with big tables.

Other than chains...

In Santana Row there are a slew of restaurants including a very good Indian place and a rather pricey Greek place, some with outdoor tables that, as the days get warmer and longer, may be more appropriate.

Azteca (technically milpitas but on the edge of north San Jose) is a good mexican place that can accommodate a large group without notice. Vegetarian and seafood obviously work.

In south SJ, there is Mandarin Gourmet which is similar (large tables, quiet dining room).

SJ is a pretty big area, in practice, what you really want to do is ask "near 101? near 880 (17)? near 280? near 85?"

In Santa Row, there is the nice but affordable French restaurant The Left Bank. I eat there a lot when I am in San Jose. The ceilings are pretty tall, which usually means bad acoustics, but I don't recall the sound being bad. There may be some semi-private dining space that would serve your needs.
