Best ways to add and display photos on a Wordpress Blog?

I have a how-to type Wordpress blog and I'd like to start adding more photo essays and tutorials to it. I'm looking for advice about the best ways to organize and display them, recommendations for plugins or software that can make my job easier, and links to web sites that have found a way to do it better than almost everyone else.

I don't care much for "effects" or being able to display photos in a slide show. I'm mainly looking for a faster/easier way to get a bunch of medium size photos on a page, add and edit captions, get pages to load as quick as possible, and provide an easy interface and positive experience for my visitors

As far as the technical side goes, I dunno, but if you don't already frequent it, Instructables has both great and terrible pictorial how-tos. The users there are even happy to point out in the comment which is which.

Have you tried the Lightbox 2 plugin? Lightbox could count as "effects" but it's also in my opinion the best way to handle groups of photos on a page. The plugin should handle most of the heavy lifting from your point of view, too.
