Alternative to exorbitant US text rates through 3G?

I text a lot, but don't feel like paying the exorbitant prices for text packages here in American. I have plenty of 3G bandwidth, and wondered if there was a free/cheaper alternative than paying $10 a month for 1000 texts. I only need to text in the US and have a google voice account, but need a way to send and receive texts to my Android Phone.
Yup - can't you send SMS through your Google Voice account using the Android app? Not sure if the Android app will push received SMS as well, but at least on the iPhone the way I'd do it is to set up Google Voice to forward SMS to email, then set up push notifications for email.

GVoice sends and receives free SMS, if your phone can get it's head around that. It's really great, too, keep a record of txts and/or voice-mails, not determined by your cell phone providers jive-junk software...

Google Voice is exactly what you want. Download the Google Voice app from the market, it will send free SMS messages, use your current Google contacts, and the app settings will allow you to set a 'check for new messages' time interval. Make sure you are NOT forwarding Google Voice text messages to your actual phone, as that will use up your text messages and give you two copies of each text received.
