MacBook Air I/O error

Is this MacBook Air's hard drive borked?

I believe that it's running Snow Leopard. The computer doesn't get past the boot screen (grey, apple logo, spinning wheel).

Safe boot status gives three "disk0s2: I/O error" and then reboots.

Single user mode + "fsck -fy" gives the same three "disk0s2: I/O error", tries to "catalog b-tree" rebuild, then says that the drive cannot be rebuilt.

So, do we now have a very expensive, very thin brick?

Best answer: Drive is borked. Call AppleCare for service.

Response by poster: Thanks for confirming. A piggyback complication: the computer was bought in the States but is now in NZ. Can AppleCare NZ help or will we need to send this sucker packing back to the States?

It's not a brick. Hard drives are expected to die, and they're not complicated to replace. If under warranty get Apple to do it.

If not, just about any computer store can do it and will sell you a new drive. Look for one that'll do authorized apple repairs, or attempt it yourself.

Hard drives are pretty easy to replace. If it isn't under warranty, it's easy enough to do yourself. Otherwise, it can't hurt to call AppleCare NZ and see what your options are.

Best answer: All above are correct, but be aware that Apple will not recover data for you when they replace your machine. Hopefully you have a backup- you reaaallyy should- but if not, you should take it to a shop that does data recovery before you give it to Apple.

Best answer: Apple's warranty for mobile computers and devices is valid worldwide. Call Apple NZ and get it repaired, shouldn't be an issue.
