Help me with a basic follow up with a professional contact

I was introduced to a high-up person in my firm who works on the type of projects that I'm interested in joining. I'm not actively seeking placement on one of his projects, but it would be nice for him to remember me. Our meeting lasted about less than 2 minutes and he asked basic questions about the type of work experiences I've had.
I'd like to follow our brief meeting with an email to say "it was nice meeting you", but I'm having trouble because the wording sounds so awkward and I don't have much to say except for it was nice to meet you.

Tell him you appreciated talking about x at meeting y last night. Then ask him if he would be willing to give you some advice for someone who hopes to be working in his area of expertise someday. A meeting will naturally follow. Follow up with a phone call a day or two after the email.

what yoyoceramic said is just right. My only hedge would be on the telephone follow-up; I've scheduled most of these follow-ups by email only. The telephone entered into it only for extended conversations.

If you feel comfortable, you may also follow up with a LinkedIn connection; it is a pretty low-key way to hear about things they are doing and vice versa, as wel as to see who else they know (virtual org chart!).

If you can include the name of someone he likes and respects, or at least feels neutral towards, that could help him remember you and place you on the tree of people and institutions he already knows.

You could say something like "it was nice to meet you last night when Joe introduced us. I enjoyed our discussion and ..." or "I enjoyed our discussion about the Expansion Project. Ever since I worked for Joanne Smith, who is such a vocal advocate for expansions, I've been interested..."

I'd make sure there aren't internal politics to watch out for. If there are internal schisms, and you don't know where he places himself (e.g., did Joanne just withdraw support for his approach?) I'd remain a bit independent.
