Miranda and the Alchemist

Name that book: sigh. I remember reading a book probably 25 years ago, when I was 8 or 9. I read it about the same time that I read the book, Dar Tellum.
Ok, so the book in question was a youth type book (book written for a younger crowd, think Bridge to Terabithia). I could have sworn the title of the book was Miranda and the Alchemist, but searching that title has brought up zilch.
I remember vaguely that the main character (who I think is Miranda) looking for her father and actually searched the seas (went under water!) with the help of the alchemist.
That's all I've got.
