I blame Steve Jobs' parents

Please make my Mac stop talking to me.

For some reason, almost certainly having to do with my cats, when I got home tonight my MacBook (running Snow Leopard) had opened up a translucent black box covering the laft half of the dock on the bottom of my screen, which is running a commentary of whatever I'm doing and (when I have the sound on) saying it aloud as well. As you'd imagine, this is highly irritating and - as far as I can tell - serves no purpose other than to infuriate me. Does anybody know what this is, or, more importantly, how the hell I can get rid of and and possibly send it to burn in hell?

I appreciate it. Time is a factor.

I think you have VoiceOver turned on. Go to System Preferences --> Universal Access to turn it off.

It's a feature that helps some disabled people.

Fn-Command-F5 (since you're on a laptop).

Response by poster: Now that it's off I no longer feel murderous rage. I can see how it would help some people, in retrospect, though I fear the cure may be worse than the disease, as it were.

Anyway, thank you for you help.

Also, under "Keyboard" you can enable or disable keyboard shortcuts. I'd suggest disabling this one, if the cats are likely to do this again.

I can sympathize with your murderous rage. It can be so flippin' maddening. I had a kid at one school who figured out how to turn it on even though his account was well locked down. Took a while to undo that one.

And sorry to laugh out loud at your obvious frustration.

The display on my MacBook is kaput and I'm very glad to have VoiceOver. That is all.
