What is your experience with long term viability of iPod video hardware?

I use a iPod Video 5.5 quite heavily. I need to replace the battery for the second time and might upgrade the hard drive too, but first I'm wondering what else I can reasonably expect might fail ...

I've had it for over three years and have used it daily, about 10 hours a day plugged in as a portable hard drive plus two hours a day as a music player.

It's been a real tank for me and I'm glad to upgrade the battery (it's cheap and easy), but I'm curious about others' experiences with the iPod Video under heavy use before I bother investing in a new hard drive.

Have you had trouble with the screen, jack, scroll wheel due to wear (not abuse)? Is there anything else that I can expect to fail before I get another two or three years out of this thing?

I too, have used my Ipod 30gb almost everyday for the past 3-4 years extensively. The only part that Ive had to replace is the headphone jack. I should have done the battery the same time, but didnt.

It still chugging along, Ive always had it in a clear hard plastic casing along with a clear tape over the dial, which has kept it in pristine condition.

Other than the battery that doesnt hold a long charge, its still running perfectly. I think if the HD ever dies, Id upgrade to a itouch.

Best answer: I had the headphone jack fail on me. I bought a replacement off eBay and swapped it out (no soldering required), and the thing works to this day - even though I've since switched to using my iPhone as my primary music player.

I have the 30GB model the headphone jack gave out maybe 2 years ago. I blamed it on hooking up to my cars aux in and then tossing it on the passenger seat. The jack is actually a bit loose again, but now I have a dock that doesn't use the headphone jack so it doesn't bother me. Other than that, I haven't noticed anything (no case or protectors).

I also had the headphone jack replaced by iResQ, and was very happy with the service. I replaced the battery myself, which was easy.

If it came to replacing the hard drive, I would probably just spring for a new iPod classic with 160 or whatever gigs.

But I have had the 30g for a long long time and it keeps chuggin' along.

Response by poster: Super helpful to know the jack is probably next to go but is also an easy part to swap out. Thanks.

(I was thinking that at frist too Danf, but sadly the Classic and other modern iPods are a nightmare to get working with Linux--as much as I favor iPods as best bang-for-the-buck portable music players, this will probably be my last one.)
