Any members of credit unions in Washington, DC who can recommend a good one? I would like to join one, but am not a government employee or anything else fancy.
Mine is Wright-Patman Congressional Federal Credit Union, and it extends membership to a variety of non-congressional categories of people.

From what they say, persons who work, worship, volunteer, attend school in, and businesses and other legal entities in the District of Columbia can join the Agriculture Federal Credit Union. I am not a member, but know a lot of people who are and who seem satisfied. You can contact them and ask if you are eligible. They have a livechat section on their website, it seems.

I have been a very happy member of Northwest Federal Credit Union.
Here are a few that advertise on local NBC.

I bank with NASA Federal Credit Union, and I am most assuredly not a NASA employee. They've been nothing but wonderful for me, and gave me an amazing rate on my car loan.

If you have any connection to Fairfax County Public Schools (i.e. have a child in the system, have ever taken an adult education course from them, etc.) you've got an invite to join Apple Federal Credit Union.

Pentagon Federal Credit Union - check out their website
Anyone can join
If you don't fit into one of the many categories (Red Cross volunteer is one), there is a loophole where you "join" as a member of the National Military Family Association - which anyone can join (for a very small one time fee)
They have great rates and a great online website to apply for loans and do your banking - check them out at:

For the record, almost every locality in the US has a federal credit union that any resident of or employee in that county can join. Check your yellow pages.

Good question! I almost posted this exact question during the snowstorm.
Congressional and PenFed look nice, but the only gimmick I can see for Congressional without changing jobs would be to join the Congressional Softball (or kickball) League. Hm... Could be fun, but it's hard to think about something that ambitious until Spring gets a little closer.
