have you had a brazilian keratin treatment done on your hair? tell me about it!

i'm in the process of growing my hair out for the first time in YEARS. i've been really getting into some forms of dance in which the image/movement is greatly benefited by having AWESOME HAIR TO TOSS AROUND lol. originally i'd wanted to get it straightened once i get another 5 or 6 inches, but, er, am kind of afraid doing so will make my hair fall out as it's been previously permed AND dyed so i'm not really sure what damaging it MORE can do, and a friend with previously permed/dyed hair had a straightening go VERY BADLY. i've been hearing things about this brazilian keratin/blowout treatment that's supposed to heal damaged hair and make it shiny, healthy, and easy to manage.

but- i've never really had hard to manage hair (i consider it an ordeal even to blowdry and usually just airdry it, and i'm the type that can usually just roll out of bed and my hair looks ok- i don't even need to brush it most of the time, and i never use products in it)- it doesn't frizz and it's not difficult to style or anything, so i'm wondering, is this treatment for me? a lot of reviews/etc that i'm coming across seem to be from women with radically different hair from mine (hair that frizzes, difficult to style, etc). none of my friends have had the treatment done so i don't have the benefit of first-hand information. i'm looking for something that'll give me that fantastic lush longhaired look (my hair has lost a lot of its luster from being damaged by other treatments and those shine shampoos/treatments just make my hair oily)

have you had a brazilian keratin treatment done? did you feel like the high cost (seems to run about $300 or more) was worth it? how long did it last? what kind of hair did you have before and after? is it a good treatment for asian hair? and lastly- anywhere in the bay area with a stylist who is kickass at the treatment? anywhere in the bay area is fine, i don't care how far i have to drive as long as i'm getting a great and experienced stylist.

thank you metafilter!!

I have a friend who got this done. She's happy with it and styling is super fast (her natural hair is very thick and wavy, took forever to blow dry). I have similar hair to hers and was considering it, but decided against it. The price was the major issue for me, especially because you have to have it re-treated every 3-6 months.

I've heard anecdotally that the keratin treatment works best on hair that's naturally dry and frizzy (for comparison to the link above, this is what Garance Doré's hair used to look like). I've never heard of someone who's basically OK with the condition of their hair getting it done; if your hair already retains enough moisture that it doesn't frizz, it might not make much of a difference in your hair.

Try the Jojoba oil from Trader Joe's. Apply when your hair is wet, comb through.

Try it without other products. You'll have to fiddle with the amount to get the look you want.

Jojoba is magic. It's all natural and great for your hair. And skin.

At $6.99 you have nothing to lose:)

I had the treatment done in december but cant really write about it now (on an iPhone). Just FYI, though, it's ok to have the treatment if you have damaged hair. Memail me for more details, which I'll gladly share here...

I did the BKT three times last year on my tightly curled hair (medium density and thickness). It's a bit past my waist when straightened and prior to the BKT it was about shoulder length when curly. The BKT greatly relaxed the curl and my hair is almost waist length when curly now. It retains moisture better and the breakage has stopped completely. I had a few areas in the front and back of my head that were very frizzy, dry and bulky and the BKT reduced the volume and tamed my hair into a more unified curl pattern.

It hasn't worn off because I did the treatment once a month and cost was minimal because I did it myself.

Since your hair has been chemically processed the treatment will last longer and produce more dramatic results than on virgin hair.
