Best bank for a poor guy in Denver.

What is the best bank in Denver?

I will be moving to Denver in about two weeks so I need a new bank. I'm currently with PNC. I'm only employed part time currently so I don't have direct deposit. Needs to be FREE checking, preferably with no minimum balance. I will be a high school teacher once I am gainfully employed. Not sure it that makes a difference if any banks offer anything special for state employees.

I'm very happy with "Public Service Credit Union" which has a number of branches in Denver (and throughout Colorado for that matter.) Checking is free, and you should be eligible to be a member, I think just by living in the community.

Response by poster: I've seen some good and some bad about The Bank of the West and they are currently offering $100 for signing up for free checking. Anyone have Bank of the West?

I currently bank with Westerra, which has been... meh. It's not bad, but the branches are not conveniently located and I've had some issues with online banking.

Conversely, I've interacted with PSCU and had good experiences. Many of the credit unions in Denver will let other unions' members do basic banking with them (i.e., look for the "CU Service Centers").

That said, my partner swears by Wells Fargo. It's, uh... not as evil as Bank of America?

I use compass. I'm pretty sure they offer free checking with a $25 minimum balance. The nice thing about them is they rebate all ATM charges. If you keep your receipts, you just take them into the bank and about a week later I get a nice refund. Then I don't have to worry about finding an ATM in town or worrying about how much they charge.

Check Wachovia's free checking - now that's Wells Fargo/Wachovia I'm not sure what the deal is, but it used to be that Wachovia's free checking did not require anything - no minimum, no direct deposit, etc.

Best answer: Please consider a credit union, not a commercial bank. Especially if you are a teacher, there is likely a credit union geared toward those in your profession. i've banked at credit unions for thirty years and absolutely never miss commercial banks, especially last week when i was a couple of bucks off on my balance. a commercial bank would have dinged me for $30+ in fees, etc. My credit union? They automatically did a transfer balance from my savings for free. On the rare occasions they charge fees, I often politely ask for them to be refunded, and they always are (we're talking one fee every two years or so).
