US Work Visa - What type should I be applying for?

I have a degree in computer networking and over five years experience developing code for websites and doing various web design things. I want to obtain employment in the US doing PR (Public Relations) - specifically Internet marketing. I live in Canada however. What kind of work visa should I get and what is the easiest way to do so? I plan to work for an employer for the first six months I arrive and operate my own business on the side eventually becoming entirely self-employed.

I've some experience in this and it's complicated of course but I think this is as cogent of an analysis and as good of a starting place as I've seen. The usual caveats apply of course.

Since you are a Canadian there might be less restrictive ways/programs and visa categories that you could get in to.
But normally you are looking at a H1B visa. USCIS issues only 65,000 visas per year and I think due to the current economy the quota is still open. But with this visa you might not be able to operate your own business.
