I'd give anything if I could run Temptation Blocker on my Windows XP machines.

Thanks to a previous thread, I discovered this wonderful Temptation Blocker software for the PC and I have been enjoying it on my new home PC running Windows 7: it really helps me a lot with my internet usage issues.

But my computer at work is runing XP and this software won't work on it. (I "shouldn't" even be on metafilter now.) I get a runtime error where it can't find the "file specified." It has shown up as error 80070002 and, after some amertuerish tweeking, as 2147024894.

I have researched it as best I can and found that maybe if I had someone else's default profile and loaded it in the directory with the program, it might work. I also found that this runtime problem is related to XP with service pack 2. So, it worked with XP before SP 2, and works with Vista and 7. Oh well, I better get off the net and try to get some work done.... :P

Are you a local admin on your XP machine?

Since you're at work, it's possible that not being a local admin or not having some sort of right through a Group Policy setting is causing the issue.

I am full authorized on my work machine. Plus, the same problem arises on my personal laptop. It is an XP service pack 2 thing, I'm pretty sure.

I actually got with the author of this fine program! Teh fix is to create a file called default.profile

I used notepad and saved it as a unicode file.

Place this line in the file: C:\Program Files\Temptation Blocker\uninstall.exe***C:\Program Files\Temptation Blocker\uninstall.exe***C

OH! Put the new file in the same directory as the temptationblocker.exe file!
