NewsFilter: Looking for a monthly news source. More inside.
I find I'm quite inconsistent when it comes to reading the news. Sometimes I'll go days without even glancing at the headlines, either because I'm too busy or just can't be bothered, but then I miss big stories (and smaller, but still interesting, stories too) and only find out when important stuff happens when I read about it on blogs.
What I'm looking for is a site with monthly (or even weekly, but with archives) overview of "essential" news. A bit like the BBC's Week at a Glance, (which is good, but not archived and not that much content). So far, Googling isn't turning up anything useful. Any suggestions?

Best answer: You can subscribe to Week-at-a-Glance's RSS feed using something like Bloglines. Then it will automatically be archived for you.
The Economist once had a free weekly news e-mail, which had a very brief summary of various news items.

Response by poster: Ah, the Wikipedia page is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for (thanks also for the Bloglines tip - since I already use Bloglines I can't believe I didn't think of that already!).

Dead trees, but The Washington Post Weekly is a good collection of important stories from the daily editions.
