Searching for artists similar to Rousseau...

I'm creating a short animated film and I'm searching for some artistic inspiration. I'm trying to settle on an overall color palette and stylized look for my background environments.

I admire the work of Henri Rousseau and am trying to find other artists of a similar vein - but I don't have a fine arts background and I'm drawing a blank.

Can anyone recommend artists like Rousseau that I can research?

In rough form my main characters look like this and this.

Botero? Kahlo? Rivera?

I was going to suggest Kahlo. And maybe Gauguin?

Best answer: If you like the naive look of Rousseau, maybe Grandma Moses.. and given your cute clockwork rat, the industrial look of LS Lowry could give you some fun ideas.

Response by poster: Yes, I think the look of the naive artists is what I'm looking for on this film. Many thanks, Erasmouse!
