CyanogenMod on HTC Magic in Australia ... easy right?

I recently bought a HTC Magic in Australia. I read a few posts here about software recommendations and first amongst them was the cyanogen mod. I have a few questions.
Firstly, all the tips seem to be America Centric. Any tips on non US locations? I read this for example, but it seems to refer to T mobile specific information.
Also I gather the process is: 1. Root my phone. 2. Flash the official HTC Firmware 3. Flash Cyanogen. Is that correct? Any detailed instructions on how to do those steps?
If for some crazy reason I'd rather go back to the official HTC OS, is that easy enough to do?
Also, any Australia/Sydney specific software recommendations? Or GPS utilities that can show speed, direction etc?
My phone is HTC Magic Firmware Version 1.5 BaseBand Version 62.525.20.18U_3.22.20.17 Kernal Version 2.6.27-357975db herbert@and18-2 #1069
Thanks for your help!

Response by poster: Worth noting I already have the following apps:
SMS Popup
AnyCut
aCurrency
ShopSavvy
Advanced Task Manager
NetSentry
Bonsai Blast
Friction Mobile
But I'd be interested in recommendations for paid apps that are worth the cost.
Thanks!

I wanted Android on AT&T in the US, so I got my hands on a Rogers branded HTC Dream. Once rooted, the cyanogen mod build went on fine.... however rooting the Rogers was different than the Tmobile G1 USA model. So before you just assume that's the same, keep searching. I wish I had a better answer on how to root the AUS HTC but I really don't know.

Just a quick note, don't flash Cyanogen roms the day they're released. Let other people find the bugs first, unless you want an inoperable phone :) The last few releases were particularly issue-prone right out of the gate.

It ended up being really easy and my phone works perfectly.
For your GPS type apps, when you are up and running, go to the Android Market and look for Google Maps (should be on the phone by default), My Tracks and My Maps Editor. I use GPS Status as my GPS app although it just gives me basic info about direction, speed and my GPS sat status.
Good luck!
