How can I loop audio in realtime?

What software should I use to replicate the delay/looping effect that this video employs? I would need a metronome monitor separate from the input mix. It would be amazing to tweak the length of the decay too. http://vimeo.com/7722804

I looked at the Vimeo comments and found some helpful information. But I would like to hear of any other software suggestions people have. I do not have access to Ableton Live. I'm a classical musician wanting to experiment with realtime looping.

Quoted from the Vimeo comments:
"I had a laptop in a bag over my shoulder with Ableton Live running, but it's just a long delay with feedback set to 90% so it dies out and allows for development rather than looping into a noisy blur!"
"this is pingpong delay right?"

Ableton has a very robust trial version, if you were interested in seeing how it works there. I don't believe one would be able to save the product directly in Live, however.

By which I mean, the trial is a full version with a lack of a save feature.

Lots of cheap analog delay hardware boxes out there. If you want to take this to the next level, you can cross-string them together to build some interesting non-linear patterns. You can do the same with older versions of Ableton, but it doesn't seem to work as well with the newer versions (perhaps they've improved the audio engine enough that it is more difficult to get this effect).

For live looping as a musician, I think you would be better off with something like a loop pedal. You can see KT Tunstall giving a simple demo of one here, and plenty of other videos of same are around. Akai Headrush, Boss RC Series, Digitech JamMan are some popular models I know of. While I like the video a lot, there are easier ways to go about doing the same without a laptop or any software.
