If not The Phantom Tollbooth, perhaps you're thinking of The Point?

Surely you must remember Tock, the watchdog?

You probably mean that it goes to full cel animation but there's this if you just mean he enters a cartoony, Dr. Seuss world.

Maybe The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T? Not a cartoon, but written by Dr. Seuss and the sets/props/scenery are definitely Dr. Seuss illustrations come to life.

If it had a Dr. Seuss feel to it, maybe it was a Dr. Seuss 'toon? His story called "I had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew" involves a young lad and one long winding road with underground caverns and high mountains, and lots of (sometimes disagreeable) fellow travellers.

One of his best books. If that exists as a cartoon it's MINE, I tell you, MINE. (I mean, please let me know where you saw it...)

Maybe it's Rock-A-Doodle? I only know about that film through this review, so I don't know if a road features prominently, but a child from the "real world" gets transported into a cartoon land which looks kinda sorta Seuss-ish.

It doesn't have a live action segment, but there's a winding road in the 70s Dr Seuss special Hoober-Bloob Highway...
