The two that came to mind for me are "Downtown Train" by Tom Waits (popularized by Rod Stewart) and "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum.

Response by poster: None of these, thanks; enjoyed listening, though. My missing song had male voices, probably a duo, lots of hot guitar (that's what I'm trying to get to, btw) the story was impending infidelity train-wreck, IIRC, and it was in heavy rotation, no doubt a top-10 or so single along with, or same year as, that Steve W song…
