Is there a Muxtape analog yet? I've seen Mixtape.me but the song selection is constraining me.

I know Muxtape died from RIAA troubles so I suppose I'm not hoping for a pretty application with which to upload mp3s (though that would be preferable) but is there anything else out there? Is there a Mixtape.me with a better selection? Should I just .zip my mp3s together and email my mix like a loser?

If you've got space to host your own, Opentape is the answer.

If you're worried about RIAA, put the page behind a password.

Response by poster: I don't have server space. Am I stupid to wonder if Opentape would work on a premium rapidshare account? If I had one, hypothetically.

I don't know anything about free hosting options these days but all you really need is a service that allows you to run php scripts. After that Opentape is pretty easy to install (unzip the directory, make the 'songs' directory readable). You can do all the uploading and customizing via the web.

I have no idea how rapidshare works.

You can also try 8Tracks, which is not perfect, but it's a great resource in the absence of Muxtape.

Opera has a new feature, Unite - which lets you host media files on your computer - so essentially, as long as you are sharing with your friends, you can put anything you like on them and not raise any concerns that others services had.

I've been using MixPod the last few weeks. No complaints so far.
You can add shared tracks to a playlist (crap, mostly) or link to content hosted externally. One cool feature is the ability to easily embed the player on a variety of sites--wordpress, iGoogle, Facebook, GWave, or your own web site. Lots of player customizations as well - themes, color schemes, etc.

I confess I don't know a lot about any of this, but is blip.fm something that would serve your needs?

I use 8tracks and playlist.com. Playlist has been a really pleasant surprise for me. The design makes it look like something I wouldn't like, but in reality it's easy to use and has a good selection of music.

You can save playlists for streaming on Grooveshark.com. The selection is very good, not exhaustive.
