I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee with a 318 and NP249 transfer case that needs to be replaced as the chain is beginning to slip. I'm thinking about putting in an NP242 as a replacement. Does anyone know if this would be a direct swap, and if not, what is involved?

Google? *shrug*

One site says:

"Yes the NP242 transfer case is a good swap, all u half to really do is swap the front output shaft out of the NP249 (Quadr-Trac) and put it into the NP242. and u will also need to swap the selector shaft and and the bexel for the gears. it is a relatively easy swap for a person who knows their way around a tool box. u could also Call George Kepplein at Transfer Case unlimited, he makes rebuilt NP242 that are an exact bolt on, it comes with everything, for around $1000 (don't know the exact price). "

I have a Landcruiser, so beats me.

Response by poster: Well, I'm hoping someone here has a more personal experience. The information on the web is somewhat inconsistent.

Try the forums on jeepin.com. Seems to be some wrench turners there, just make sure you know your body designation, xj or whatever.
Also, what kind of tires do you run? How are they in snow rain? I need to get new ones on my Cherokee Sport and have been very unhappy with the stock tires.

Response by poster: Evilelf, BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A, 31 inch. We don't get much snow here, but they do pretty well in rain, mud and on rocks. You'd need about 3 inch lift to run 31's and get rims with different backspacing, or adjust turn limiters, otherwise the tires will rub on lower control arms. However, I think you can buy them in stock size as well.
