Online system for group SMS (Europe)?

I want to put on an urban murder-mystery-like game in Portugal. The system would use SMS to communicate with players. Is there an online system that could send an SMS to every player at once, or to different combinations or groups within the large group (preferably free)?

Wasn't this the original purpose of Twitter?
Everyone subscribes to your feed and sets their preferences to get updates on their mobile.

Skype can do mass SMS, but not free I think.

Can you use AIM somehow? I know you can SMS phones from AIM, but I'm I've never tried to SMS multiple people at once.
