What are some good songs about being on tour?

My band's tour is coming to an end and I'd like to make a goodbye mix for all the crew and other bands we've been rolling with for the past month+.

They could be classic (American band, various zepplin), obscure (humble pie's 30 Days In The Hole [my personal favorite]) or modern (living legends' Creative Differences). They don't have to entirely be about touring as long as at least one verse or so specifically talks about life on the road as a musician.

i'm sure i'll think of more as this is one of my favorite themes for bands that tour a lot, but the one that immediately came to mind is ani difranco's imagine that.

imagine that i am onstage
under a watchtower of punishing light
and in the haze is your face bathed in shadow
and what's beyond you is hidden from sight
and somebody right now is yawning
and watching me like a tv
and i've been frantically piling up sandbags
against the flood waters of fatigue and insecurity

then suddenly i hear my guitar singing
and so i just start singing along
and somewhere in my chest
all the noise just gets crushed by the song

Billy Joel's the entertainer:

"I am the entertainer,
Been all around the world.
I've played all kinds of palaces,
And laid all kinds of girls.
I can't remember faces,
I don't remember names.
Ah, but what the hell,
You know it's just as well.
'Cause after a while
And a thousand miles,
It all becomes the same.

I am the entertainer,
I bring to you my songs.
I'd like to spend a day or two.
I can't stay that long.
No, I've got to meet expenses.
I got to stay in line.
Gotta get those fees
To the agencies.
And I'd love to stay,
But there's bills to pay,
So I just don't have the time."

one of my favorite songs.

Ballad of Tindersticks (can be heard here)

...We are artists. We are sensitive and important
We nod our heads earnestly
Already halfway down the champagne
On our way to leaving the place dry
A $2000 bar bill

Showbiz picks up the tab
And we're on our way laughing
Laughing at what
Los Angeles, 8 days in
And our sense of irony's running pretty thin

All the friends we've made
It's 2am, closing time at the Dresden
Marty and Layton play one last sleepy "Strangers in the Night"
And the last of the martinis dribble down our chins
We're sitting chasing the conversation around a table

Jesus, how long have I been in this state?
The limousine's still waiting outside
Anything you want to do?
Anywhere you want to go?
We're on our way to the airport and a plane to Vegas....

A less famous They Might Be Giants song about touring, but probably more accurate: 'They Got Lost', from the album of the same name:

John said to John, "I think we make a left at the light
There should be a big 'B,' assuming this map is right"
John looked over and he said, "Hey, no it's not
It's a crumpled up wrapper from the fast food that we got"

I heard They Might Be somewhere near this town
They Might Be Giants got lost driving around

---

'The Mesopotamians' is also about touring, if outmoded gods could form a band.

"On a tour of one night stands, my suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one man band."

Tour Song by Jawbreaker is truly awesome.

Tuscadero, from DC, who released their first stuff on Teenbeat had a good song on The Pink Album called Crayola. "I drew a picture with my own two hands, just something simple my mind could understand, for you while you're on tour with your band."

It's definitely not their best song, but it's decent. (Don't listen to the Mark Robinson Remix, which is not as good, no matter how great Mark Robinson is.)

Jackson Browne, Nothing But Time (Running on Empty)

Rolling down 295 out of Portland, Maine
Still high from the people up there and feeling no pain
Gonna make it to New Jersey, gonna set it up and do it again
I got a bottle of wine (pass it over)
I got a broken white line (I'm still sober)
There ain't nothin but time between this Silver Eagle
And that New Jersey line
Well it's a rock and roll band or a movie you can take your pick
And it ain't bad work if you can get it
But you gotta make it stick
But getting any kind of sleep on this rolling motel--that's the trick
It's just a bottle of wine (pass it over)
It's just a broken white line (I'm still sober)
It's just a whole lot of time in the twilight zone
Between me and these friends of mine

The greatest tour song of all time. Motörhead, We Are the Road Crew:

Another town another place,
Another girl, another face,
Another truck, another race

I'm eating junk, feeling bad,
Another night, I'm going mad,
My woman's leaving, I feel sad

But I just love the life I lead,
Another beer is what I need,
Another gig my ears bleed
We Are the Road Crew

Another town I've left behind,
Another drink completely blind,
Another hotel I can't find

Another backstage pass for you,
Another tube of super glue,
Another border to get through

I'm driving like a maniac,
Driving way to hell and back,
Another room a case to pack
We Are the Road Crew

Another hotel we can burn,
Another screw, another turn,
Another Europe map to learn

Another truckstop on the way,
Another game that I can play,
Another word I learn to say

Another blasted customs post,
Another bloody foreign coast,
Another set of scars to boast
We Are the Road Crew

"White Lightning and Wine" by Heart:

"This night's gone, we're moving on
Highway's calling out loud ..."

Maybe "You Had Time" by Ani DiFranco:

"you'll say did they love you or what
i'll say they love what i do
the only one who really loves me is you
and you'll say girl did you kick some butt
and i'll say i don't really remember
but my fingers are sore
and my voice is too"

or maybe "Little Plastic Castles", also by Ani DiFranco:

"in a coffee shop in a city
which is every coffee shop in every city
on a day which is every day
i picked up a magazine
which is every magazine
read a story, and then forgot it right away"

or perhaps "Egos Like Hairdos", also by Ani DiFranco:

"they told me you wanted to play last
every profession has its system of castes
so they reverse the order we go on
and then you stand at the bar
and you talk through my songs"

or possibly "Every State Line", also by Ani DiFranco:

"a little town in pennsylvania
there was snow on the ground
a parked in an empty lot
where there was no one else around
but i guess i was taking up too much space
as i was trying to get some sleep
'cause an officer came by anyway
and told me i had to leave"

or possibly even "Shy", also by Ani DiFranco:

"'let's not ask what's next,
or how, or why'
i am leaving in the morning
so let's not be shy"

but definitely "Freakshow", also, of course, by Ani DiFranco:

"life in the circus ain't easy
but the folks on the outside don't know
the tent goes up and the tent comes down
and all that they see is the show
and the ladies on the horses look so pretty
and the lions are lookin real mad
and some of the clowns are happy
and some of the clowns are sad

but underneath
there's another expression
that the makeup isn't making
life under the big top
it's about freedom
it's about faking
there's an art to the laughter
there's a science
and there's a lot of love
and compliance

welcome to the freakshow
here we go...

we live to hear the slack-jawed gasping
we live under a halo of held breath
and when the children raise up a giant shield
of laughter, it's like they're fending off death
and we can make somethig bigger
then anyone of us alone
and then the clowns will take off their makeup
and the people will go home

but life on the outside ain't easy
no sequins, no elephants,
no parading around
yeah, the tent goes up
and the tent comes down
and they're stuck in this fucking town

you need a lot of love and compliance"

Oh, geez - also, much of Paul Simon's One Trick Pony:

Paul Simon's "God Bless the Absentee":

"Lord, I'm a working man
And music is my trade
I'm travelin' with this five-piece band
And I play the ace of spades
I have a wife and family
Who don't see much of me
God bless the absentee"

Paul Simon's "Jonah":

"Half and hour you change your strings and tune up
Sizing the room up
Checking the bar
Local girls unspoken conversations
Misinformation
Plays the guitar"

and "How the Heart Approaches What it Yearns" sounds like a hotel-room-on-the-road song to me, but I'm not certain it is.

But also Paul Simon's "Ace in the Hole":

"Riding on this rolling bus
Beneath a stony sky
With a slow moon rising
And the smokestacks drifting by
In the hour when the heart is weakest
And the memory is strong
When time has stopped
And the bus just rolls along"

and also his "Long, Long Day":

"I sure been on this road
Done nearly fourteen years
Can't say my names well known
You don't see my face in Rolling Stone
But I sure been on this road"

Jimmy Buffett, Come Monday:

"Headin’ up to San Francisco

And honey I didn’t know
That I’d be missin’ you so

Chorus:
Come monday, it’ll be all right
Come monday, I’ll be holdin’ you tight
I spent four lonely days in a brown LA haze
And I just want you back by my side

Yes, it’s been quite a summer
Rent-a-cars and west-bound trains
And now you’re off on vacation
Somethin’ you tried to explain
And darlin’, since I love you so
That’s the reason I just let you go..."
