Help me come close to identifying a book i only quickly glanced at a girl reading on the train!
I hazily and quickly glanced at a girl reading a book on the NYC subway. It was a heavily dog-eared paperback with several post-it notes scattered throughout it like it may have been studied for a class. I told myself to make a note of the author because it was strange and short. something like "Mr. Ot" "Dr. Ug" "Mr. X" "Dr. Z" "Ogg" SOMETHING like that (NOT Dr. Oz.. though) The cover had a sort of pastel-colored collagy D.I.Y. look to it. Of course i forgot the name completely and its just driving me crazy. Any ideas? I know its a long shot to guess a book by its cover.

I'm going to guess Amos Oz as the author. He'd have enough cachet to be read in a class.
For the cover, based on your description, Where the Jackals Howl?

Is it the author's name that is short and strange? Or the book's title?
Amos Oz is a good guess. How about Kobo Abe?

The one author I can think of with a distinctive short name that hasn't been mentioned is Korean author Ko Un (most famous as a poet but has written other things as well).

Maybe "Intern" by Dr X. The first two hits on GIS don't match up with my memory of the late-70s-style copy I had in college.
