Portland, OR bicycling in winter clothing suggestions. Where's the best place in town to find some pants/jackets that aren't going to break the bank?

I have a 7 mile commute, uphill both ways, and want to get my winter clothing. My girlfriend also commutes and this is her first winter in Portland and has no rain gear bicycling or otherwise so any suggestions of womens jackets, pants, gloves would also be very helpful.

You might check Clever Cycles. I believe they stock much more clothing than they show online. Todd, the owner, bikes exclusively and is very into woolen clothes, so you might be able to pick his brain about where else to look. Tell him I said hi!

You live in crazy land! Ahhh!

The best jackets for biking are the short, lightweight jackets that have the thing around the bottom you can tighten to 'seal' it. Honestly, I got mine at Goodwill. You could also check Craigslist and the second-hand hipster stores, like Red Light, Recycled Fashion, etc. If you go someplace like REI, you'll end up paying around $100 (and up).

I don't think you need special pants. I would suggest, however, that you get mud flaps/guards/etc on your tires, or you will be wet and muddy by the time you get to work. Here's a site that tells you how to build your own.

Response by poster: So far I've found Cannondale Men's Metro Pants and Fox Wear Pants.

Any advice on ponchos?

Honestly, I'd go to Next Adventure and explain what you're looking for. They're knowledgable, friendly, helpful, and much more reasonably priced than a bike-specific store or a place like REI.

You can get clear or yellow rain jackets for quite cheap, but the price-value is in ventilation since there is a lot of sweatiness when riding in the rain. The cheapest should be under about $20.

I work outdoors all summer and use a bike to get around all winter (Vancouver, similar conditions..)
If you can find them there -or you could order online- try k-way's jackets, I've found you could stand in torrential rain for an entire day and still be dry when you take it off.
Comparatively, this past summer I decided just to take a cheap no-name jacket found on the street in the spring ... within five minutes of rain starting, I would feel my t-shirt underneath sticking to me. Luckily it was a dry summer.....

Best answer: I'm also in Portland and asked a similar question recently which you might find helpful.
