Hospital/Doctors recommendation in Melbourne, Australia for backache/neckache.

Hey there,

Just wondering if any of you know of any good doctor/hospital that deals with neckache and backache?

The cause of neckache and backache is not of an ordinary one but am expriencing it everyday for the past 5 years. Its starting to take its effect on my daily chores.

Which hospital/doctor is good in Melbourne CBD, VIC, Australia or maybe within 10km radius or so.

Thanks

Do you have a good GP? You'll probably have to start there to get a referral to a specialist who can look at it in more detail. I highly recommend the Northside Clinic on St Georges Road in Fitzroy North. Its not super central, but I am very fussy about my GP and cant recommend them highly enough. Good luck! Feel better!

If you go to a hospital for something that you have had every day for the past five years you will be put in the "hypochondriac time-waster drug seeker" category. Hospital is for emergencies. ONLY EVER EMERGENCIES. EVER.

Hospital emergency departments do not have the facilities, or the interest, to help with your type of problem. This is absolutely for a general practitioner. Ask a friend, neighbour, colleague or fellow student for a recommendation.

I know we often see people on Ask Metafilter requesting advice for doctors specialising in particular areas. But they are Americans. And America has the stupidest health system in the universe and they tend to go to specialists and emergency departments long before Australians do.

It's probably not because Americans are soft ;-)... more likely an insurance thing.

But for the love of all things holy DO NOT GO TO A HOSPITAL unless it is an EMERGENCY. EVER.

Send a message to Goshling. She's a remedial massage therapist, and may be able to see if the problem is musculoskeletal. It could be as simple as how you sit and stand.

If the problem is not a simple structural issue, then she can refer you on to a suitable GP.

Back and neck problems can be caused by almost anything, from differences in leg length, to spinal problems to bad habits when sitting to having a mattress that doesn't support your body properly. So, be prepared to try different things when you seek advice.

...I have no connection to Goshling othe than I noticed she was a massage therapist, simply because I'm studying to be one as well :)

Good luck.

oh hai!

The question is actually a bit vague. As Taff suggested, I'm not sure why you're asking about hospital? Casualty/ER is definitely NOT the place for you to go, unless you find you can not move without EXCRUCIATING pain that renders you unable to function.

For anything else, I suggest you start with a GP as your starting point for diagnosis & referral. Hospitals run outpatent clinics, one of which might be suitable for your particular issue, however you WILL need a referral from a GP, you can't just arrive & be seen.

You say the cause is not an ordinary one? I gather by that you know what the cause is? Is the cause ongoing or historical? What is the nature of the pain? If I was going to treat you or refer you to someone else, I'd be asking a lot of questions to try to ascertain what might be your best options. What treatments have you tried? Did they alleviate or exacerbate the issue? Etc etc etc

There's just not enough information here for me to suggest anything or anyone. If you would like to provide some more detail, I'm happy to think it over & see if I can suggest something. Many of my clients get treatment elsewhere in conjunction with what I do, so if your case sounds familiar to anyone I work with, I might be able to get the details of someone to refer you on to.

I'm in Armadale & can arrange a time if you want to drop in & have a chat or call me on the phone (my mobile number which is my main business number is in my profile), or feel free to mefi mail me if you don't want to respond in public. I can assure you that no matter how out of the ordinary you say the cause of your pain is, I've worked with many extraordinary cases, some of which may make your eyes pop out.

Ongoing spine pain can be a more complicated problem than GPs are prepared to handle--you'll get the best treatment recommendations from someone who specializes in this.

Contact Dr. Paul Verrills at Metro Spinal Clinic in Caulfield South. He is a specialist in back and neck pain, especially of a chronic and/or neuropathic nature. He or one of his partners at the clinic may be able to help you.

Good luck.
