Fun and games in Japan

My lovely partner is off to Japan for three weeks. What neat stuff is there to do? Details to follow:
He's attending a couple of conferences over the period, with a few days at the end of that spell as a minibreak. He arrives in Ikebekuro on Friday night, and has the weekend to himself until his conference starts. Then off to Niseko on Sunday 13th of Sept, a ski resort on Hokkaido. Finally, four days in Sapporo from the 20th.
What mischief can an enthusiastic geeky chap get up to around there? He's got some high school Japanese in his favour, and is not afraid to inflict it on the natives.
Priorities include the acquisition of neat tech and sampling local flavour. Japanese Mefites, let's see what you've enjoying.

What is there you can't do? Visiting Japan is like visiting Mars.
