The Video I Knew Somewhere

Monkees (tv show) Filter: I'm trying to remember which song was played in a music video/interlude in an episode of their tv show and, ultimately, track down a clip of it.

As a kid in the 1980s, the Monkees were my favorite group, and I watched repeats of their eponymous show every day. Now, I'll admit that I was only a few years old, so my memory may be very flawed (so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about anything). I remember that many (or maybe all?) episodes included a song that was kind of like a mini-music video. Well, I saw one that blew my seven or eight year-old mind. I recall this music video didn't have them running around like sped-up maniacs. They were performing the song in a dark room (I'm assuming the entire thing took place in this room, but I could be wrong), and one was playing a organ-type keyboard that had big circles in the front that lit up. It was very mod looking (once again, if I recall correctly).

Now, as to the song.. I have thought for years that it was 'Valleri,' and I've fruitlessly searched for this video on YouTube. There actually is a video of 'Valleri' that looks like it could be from the show on YT, and it's nothing at all like this brilliant video that has haunted me. So, I'm guessing it wasn't 'Valleri'. There's one other aspect that I THINK I remember. I feel like the room was dark and they were wearing all white (or white shirts) and then there was the lit-up keyboard. I mean, it was very minimalistic. I have a picture from a Monkees greatest hits cd that kind of reminded me of how I've been envisaging the video.

Anyway, does this ring a bell with any Monkee fans?

Betcha it's Daily Nightly, an amazing (and way underrated) song. Moog time!

Best answer: Could it be the song "Star Collector"?

Oh she's a star collector,
Collector of sta-ars...

I just can't put my finger on what it is...

It might be from the movie Head. I've never seen the movie, but "minimalistic" certainly matches up with what little I've read about it.

It's good to know that I wasn't the only kid in the 80's with a Monkees fixation.

Sorry, forgot the link.

It was either "Daily Nightly" or "Star Collector," as mentioned above; those were the only two songs performed in white turtlenecks on that psychedelic lighting/circular set.

Response by poster: You are BRILLIANT, Metafilter!!!! I watched both videos, and as I had surmised, my memory was a bit off. It ended up being 'Star Collector' (which is just as cool as I remembered it being.. albeit different than I remembered). But, even though it wasn't 'Daily Nightly,' that video is more similar to what I had described, and it really IS an amazing song, so thank you mintcake! for introducing me to it!

It's been over 20 years since I've seen Head. I wonder what I'd make of it now. I remember being frightened by the part where they're in the vacuum.. and I remember my Mom ranting about everyone being on drugs. I'm sure I'd appreciate it more now!

Thank you all! I don't know how you were all able to narrow it down to two songs in no time flat! You're all Monkee Scholars!

Response by poster: Oh, and I meant to say to corey flood: Yeah, I remember kids my age not knowing who the Monkees were (for shame!) and wondering why I was so obsessed with something that they already considered an oldies act. It's a shame because they really are underrated!

I wasn't much of a Monkees fan back in the day, but I did see Head and was impressed with its insanity. I'd like to see it again; I still remember Frank Zappa's walk-on. That was so weird.

Response by poster: Wow, okay, I'll definitely have to get Head (the movie.. that seems badly worded)! I didn't even know who Frank Zappa was back then. That IS impressive that he was in that movie. I guess he must have seen something special in them, too?
