Help me find this history of an ocean/sea: If I remember correctly, it was written by a French historian while he was held as a POW in the Second World War, and was either about the Atlantic or the Mediterranean.
I remember reading about it in a course on historiography. It was mentioned only in passing for its historiographical significance, so I don't remember the author's name or much at all about its content. All I do know is that it was discussed as an example of a great work of history which was novel in its vast scope, treating the ocean/sea as the subject; and that it was either about the Atlantic or the Mediterranean, written I think in French. I also remember wondering how the author managed to write the book while he was a POW, presumably without access to books and his notes.

"While a prisoner of war Braudel was without access to his books or notes; he relied on his prodigious memory to contemplate and draft his work." -- wikipedia
