MovieFilter: Help identify Cyborg flick

I'm trying to find out what specific cyborg movie I remember seeing as a kid. Details are inside, but scarce!

Once my dad took me to stay at a hotel when my sister was having a big slumber party (awesome dad FTW!). I remember playing board games and staying up late to watch some way-too-mature-for-my-age movie on HBO/similar.

The movie was about Cyborgs of some sort. From what I recall, it was set in a post-apocalyptic future when humans were fighting cyborgs. The setting seemed to be the desert, and it mostly took place outdoors. The main character was a woman, I'm pretty sure. I get the feeling that there were "good" and "bad" cyborgs as well. The main female character may have even been a cyborg. It was almost like a cyborg war in the desert. I think I remember there being a child or children that needed protected as well.

It was certainly not a high-budget, famous movie like Terminator (I've seen all the Terminators many times and it was nothing like them). Nor does it appear to be the van Damme "Cyborg" flick. I know there was a sequel to that with Angelina Jolie, but that doesn't look familiar at all. I don't remember anything about the title. It may or may not have actually included the word "cyborg".

The time period when I saw it would have been early 90s. The movie may have been a little older, though it was on the premium movie channels at the time. Actually, I remember we had just gone to see "Stargate" in theaters that night, which came out in 1994, so that is a clue.

I know the details are scarce, but I've been wondering about this my whole life in the back of my mind. If I see video or screencaps I'll almost certainly be able to identify it.

Thanks MeFites!

Although there is a distinction between cyborgs and robots which geeks like me sometimes think about, the movie otherwise sounds like it could be Hardware, from 1990. Hey, it's got killer robots, a post-apocalyptic desert, and Iggy Pop and Lemmy in supporting roles, so it is worth mentioning in any circumstance.

Could it have been Knights with Kris Kristofferson and Lance Henriksen?

Some scenes from Knights: here, here and here.

Seconding Knights. With a plot like this, how can you lose:

In the future, a kickboxer and a robot lead a revolution against ruling cyborgs.

Definitely not - it was not just one cyborg/robot but a large number fighting each other. Nothing else about that movie sounds familiar either. Thanks for playing though!

Wow, that's a lot closer! I don't think that's what it was, though elements look slightly similar (mostly the desert setting I think). Still, the enemy cyborgs do not look familiar at all.

I think it had a more futuristic feel to it, not a neo-medieval feel.

Response by poster: I should mention that I'm pretty sure guns were involved :)

Hardware, Cyborg 3, or Cyborg: Steel Warrior ?

American Cyborg: Steel Warrior certainly looks like what you describe. You can watch the first two minutes or so here on Amazon Unbox to verify.

Possibly America Cyborg: Steel Warrior.

Or, what joshrholloway said, and spelled correctly...

Setting: Check! Wasted desert, reddish, bombed-out looking city.

Cyborg: Check! Artist's boyfriend (Dylan McDermott, I think), who scavenges in the desert, has a metal cyborg replacement, from about the forearm down.

Bad robot: Check.

Hardware is what you want, Hardware is what you get.

Response by poster: American Cyborg doesn't look anything like it, from the various YouTube clips I watched. Sorry :(

Response by poster: And it's absolutely, definitely, 100% not Hardware.

Like I said, it was almost a big, outdoor Cyborg war... Knights looked similar in the setting, but not the specifics.

Could it be Screamers that your thinking of?

Nope, definitely not - sorry!

There's A.P.E.X. though the baddies were all obviously robots IIRC, there were female human fighters (1994).

Alternatively there's Nemesis with Olivier Grunier, the poor man's JCVD. Proper modified human cyborgs and I think, some female ones.

A few more possibilities (movies with really bad names):

Robot Jox
Robot Wars
Robo Warriors
Gunhed or Ganheddo

My absolute shot-in-the-dark guess is Cherry 2000. I'm probably wrong but it does have a female cyborg and deserts.

Also, holy cow this thread is going to make an amazing watch list.

Oh, also - you mentioned Cyborg and Cyborg 2, but there is a Cyborg 3 and it's really bad. It also has a lead female cyborg and is set in a desert in post-apocalyptic times. But then again, aren't they all.

possibly
Cherry 2000
TC2000
American Cyborg

Just as a point of reference, Stargate was released on Oct. 28, 1994, so any movie released before that is a possibility.

None of these :(

Knights is the only thing slightly familiar so far. But I still don't think that was it. Imagine... Knights, but instead of neo-mideval baddies, you've got humanoid cyborgs with guns. Also, it does seem that the general costuming in the flick was sort of ragged, tattered cloths, like Knights or WaterWorld.

Eh??

Thanks all :)
