Where can we stay tomorrow night (7/23) not too far off Route I-84 in New York state, hopefully west of the Hudson? Motel or B&B okay.

It's an interstate on the densely-populated Eastern seaboard. There's going to be a Motel 6 / Super 8 / Hampton Inn / Holiday Inn Express / whatever chain motel you can think of at least every 10 miles, if not more often.

Response by poster: We've traveled that route many times but never had to spend the night along there. We know that finding a motel room will be no problem, but I'm hoping somebody will have a specific place to recommend. Nothing online looks decent.

Beacon's a pretty little town on the Hudson (East side, but on the river). I've never stayed there, but there seem to be several B&Bs there. Here's a list from the Dia:Beacon website (Dia:Beacon being a cool modern art museum in Beacon).

I've made that trip many times from Cambridge, MA to Shepherdstown, WV and, while it's on the wrong side of the river, I, Mrs. Paris and Dick Jr. have stayed at the Hotel Sierra in Fishkill and been quite pleased. Good bagels.

Despite the note by dersins, it is surprisingly difficult to find a decent place west of the Hudson. There's a whole lot of empty until Scranton and then, the last time we looked for a place in Scranton without a reservation…? We found ourselves well into Wilkes-Barre as everything in Scranton was booked. We were very tired puppies.
