how to find a good neurologist?

Can anyone recommend a great Neurologist in Los Angeles (preferably close to Cedars-Sinai) or advise me how to find one?

I have new insurance (blue cross PPO) and don't know any good doctors in LA. My past physicians have only been for the occasional cold or flu, and I was not happy enough with them to ask for a recommendation for a Neurologist. The Neurologist is for a suspected seizure disorder.

I have used Cedars-Sinai's refferal program for doctors, but it usually list the doctors' phone numbers and specialties incorrectly. Also, i'd like to go to someone that has been RECOMMENDED, not just someone off the hospital's admin list.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

On second check, yelp.com sucks. Sorry.

Response by poster: I know, I tried yelp too. There should be a yelp for doctors.

One idea is searching PubMed for papers written on whatever area of medicine you're interested in. So search it for "seizures cedar sinai" and you'll get relevant papers from nearby doctors. Dunno if they'd be good or friendly, but it probably indicates they're well-informed in the area, at least. You could make the search more specific or try UCLA, too.

If you have a rare(ish) disorder, definitely do the pubmed search and see if the doctor does research in the area. Did you have a neurologist previously that you liked? Even if they are out of state, they might at least point you in the right direction in LA - when I moved to LA, my dermatologist from the east coast gave me the name of someone to look up when I got here, and I would think it is even more likely neurologists know each other across state boundaries. Also, you probably already know this, but I would look for someone who has been practicing 5+ years (has some experience), but no more than 25 years (may be out of touch with current research / treatments).

I'm unclear how far it is, but you can't do better than ikkyu2 for this specialty. He has offices in San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria - if these seem reachable to you, please memail me for his coordinates.

Response by poster: Thanks, zadcat, but that's pretty far, especially since they might take my drivers license away for a few months because of the seizures.

Oof, sorry. Good luck.

Or, you could ask ikkyu2 for his recommendation for a neurologist who specializes in seizure disorders in the LA area.

I happen to be currently listening to a > month old Adam Carolla podcast where one of his former staff members talks about a brain tumor he has that is being treated by Dr. Black of Cedars-Sinai. Apparently everyone he ran into mentioned this doctor as the goto guy. Granted you wanted a neurologist not a neurosurgeon but I got to think this doctor would have some intelligent referrals for you.

Good luck.

Response by poster: Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all your help! I ended up doing some research online and finding the name of the neurologist that runs the epilepsy program at Cedars-Sinai. I called and asked for an appointment and got one for the end of the month. Yay!

Thanks for the help and well wishes!
