2g to 3.0

I have an iPhone 2g, it's jailbroken to be able to work on t-mobile. I'd like 3.0 on there. I have pwnage, I have the ipsw ready to go but I'm terrified to hit that "Restore" button...help!

Okay I jailbroke my phone before for 2.0. It was relatively painless and everything worked like a charm (although I was terrified to do it then, too).

I've followed directions on this site but I'm still not 100% confident I'm going to come out on the other side with a iPhone working on tmobile still (as well as all my settings saved).

I used pwnage to create the .ipsw, it's ready to go. Pwnage (3.0) says for you to put your phone in restore mode, hook it up, itunes asks you if you want to restore and when I hit yes it says "warning! you'll lose all your information!!!" <> (also, is it going to restore my custom made ipsw or the official one from iTunes?)

So to sum up, how do I jailbreak my phone, upgrade to 3.0, keep it on t-mobile and keep all my settings? I'm just terrified to do this and am perfectly happy to keep 2.0 on there if this is not going to be possible at all.

You have to run the ipsw for 3.0 throug pwnage tool and then load it onto the phone by holding option while pressing restore. It worked perfectly for me.

Response by poster: Naplerzaza,

you didn't lose any of your settings, info, data? The baseband didn't altered? You can still use it for your said carrier?

I've runt he ipsw for 3.0 through the pwnage tool

I just don't know if I've got this other part down pat yet, I want to make 100% sure I've got this right because if this phone gets bricked, I'm up a creek without a paddle (hence 3.0 is not that valuable to me...in fact if it weren't for the copy and paste, I could care less)

Best answer: Since you have a 2G phone, you've got it easy. pwnagetool is overkill unless you have very specific reasons for using it.

Hypothetically, of course, here's what you might do:

1. Upgrade to 3.0 via iTunes.
2. Download redSn0w, the 3.0 ipsw, and the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders.
3. Run redSn0w, follow the instructions. Your settings should remain intact.

Your phone should then be jailbroken and unlocked.

YMMV, no warranty expressed or implied.

With the 2G it's almost impossible to break the phone. You only might make it harder to load the hacked firmware if you upgrade with an untouched firmware.

Unless you changed the options in Pwnage tool, it will automatically activate and jailbreak your 2G. It really is that easy. It's only the 3G crowd that had to wait before they could enable the phone-unlock and the 3GS crowd will wait even longer. But 2G has been very reliably unlocked for some time and I haven't heard any risks with Pwnage tool.

Let us know how it turns out, I've got an iPhone 2G (jailbroken and happily running on T-Mobile) that I'm planning to upgrade to 3.0 eventually.

Also I've had copy and paste for a while thanks to Clippy (in the Cydia app store), you don't need 3.0 to do it.

I agree with buxton, using redSn0w (formlerly Quickpwn) is the easiest route to go. I've been using quickpwn for every update for the past year and my settings have always been fine.

I've done the 2.2.1 -> 3.0 upgrade using PwnageTool on my 2G iPhone on T-Mobile with no major problems. It seems to work as advertised.

However, doing a firmware restore may indeed cause data on the phone to be erased. You can ensure smooth experimentation with the 2G iPhone by doing two simple things:

1) Back it up. Right-click on the name of your phone in iTunes, and select Backup. This will keep a copy of your settings and other information from your iPhone in iTunes on your computer.

2) Sync any photos/applications/etc with iTunes so you have in your various libraries what was on your phone.

As long as you've got the data that was formerly on the phone on your computer, you can get the phone back to its earlier state fairly quickly and easily.

Response by poster: it's this in fact...it seems to be stuck at this screen. am I okay?

Also, note that you need to hold down Option while clicking on Restore on a Mac (or hold down Shift while clicking Restore on a PC) to select your custom firmware. Simply clicking on Restore by itself won't allow you to choose the appropriate firmware.

I have a 2g iPhone, jailbroken/unlocked and working on T-Mobile. I have not yet upgraded to the 3.0 software, but I did go through the exact same process a few months ago (going from 2.0 to 2.2 or whatever it was).

Yes, I was nervous about it, but it worked just fine then, I imagine it will be fine now. (Apple doesn't seem to be paying much attention to the 2g's anymore - apparently the same tricks that have always unlocked it still work, meanwhile the 3g and 3gs are much more difficult.)

Here's the instruction/tutorial I've used.

**One suggestion (based on a post in the thread I just linked): BEFORE upgrading/unlocking, go to "Settings / General / Network / Cellular Data Network" - and write down what you've got there for "APN." You might need to reset that after the upgrade/unlock process. **

It can take a few minutes for the process to finish. Did the phone reboot yet? Worst-case you should be able to do a restore to the original firmware from iTunes (which should detect it in not-quite-right mode.)

I've had similar things happen, but it's always been recoverable. It's hard to brick a 2G.

Response by poster: okay apparently using redsnow, something is not working. This "steve jobs" cartoon apparently is recovery mode or something? I get the pineapple, and then it goes into recov mode (I think).

any help? I'm just slightly freaked

If you're in recovery mode that should be when you connect to the computer, which should make iTunes say "would you like to fix this iPhone that's in recovery mode?" - then you point it toward your "custom" firmware file.

(at least that's my understanding of the process.)

Response by poster: bux,

I reboot but I get the steve jobs cartoon. bad ipsw maybe? help!

Response by poster: dnash, oh so I should connect it to itunes when steve jobs comes up? I'm re-jailbreaking in the mean time

Sroll this page about half down to a blue box that says "you've successfully entered DFU mode"

That's where I believe you are in the process, if I'm understanding this correctly. So now the phone needs connecting to iTunes. iTunes should ask if you want to restore it. It looks like you need to hold a key when clicking "restore" in iTunes (instructions on that page are "command" key for a Mac. Probably CTRL if you're on windows?) That's to bring up the box to point the program at which file you want to use to restore on the phone - that's when you point it at the custom firmware built by Pwnage Tool or Redsnow or whatever.
posted by dnash at 2:04 PM on June 22, 2009

iTunes should indeed see it as being in recovery mode when the Jobs cartoon is there, and if it doesn't, you can just force it into DFU mode by holding down power for 5 seconds, keeping it held and holding down home for another 10 seconds, then release power and keep holding home for (IIRC) 10 seconds.

Response by poster: okay good news and bad news

good news. jailbroke, on tmobile, all is working

bad news. I lost everything and will have to start from scratch again. that's okay with me for the most part...just will be 30 minutes of re entering in data. no biggie

Hmm, I did this myself on a Mac about three hours ago (using redsn0w and these instructions) and had no problems at all.

Are you sure you don't have a backup saved in iTunes? When I'd finished jailbreaking, iTunes gave me the option to either set it up as a new phone or restore from the backup it did of the phone before updating it to 3.0. Maybe doublecheck in the iTunes settings? On the Devices tab of the preferences, it should give you a list of the available backups.
