Where can I find a nice cheap short-term furnished apartment in Toronto?

My dad has recently moved back to Ontario, and is looking to find a landing pad while he gets his bearings. We're looking for a cheapish fully furnished apartment/room that he can rent on a by-month basis. Any tips on good buildings? Any sites you've used to search this sort of thing? Personal experiences? Help!

In the US we have Extended Stay America and other similar hotels that are designed (and priced) for longer term stays. I would imagine there is something similar in Canada.

Best answer: Craigslist sublets. Especially if he doesn't mind taking care of someone's pet while subletting, this can be a really great deal.

UofT's 'the newspaper' (formerly the Independent Weekly) always seems to have listings for short-term furnished rentals for visiting scholars in their classifieds.

Best answer: Be sure to check out Craigslist Rooms & Shares as well. A lot of places offer month to month right off the bat and selection is decent, particularly if you're not stuck on a specific place to live.

I've never had much luck using university housing services...from my experience a lot of the places are lousy and student-oriented. A lot of landlords only want female boarders as well, so keep and eye out for that in any ads that strike your interest.
