What sort of free online resources are there for quality audio samples?

I'm looking for a reasonably well cataloged library of random conversations, sound effects, good old fashioned noise etc for application to some sound collage projects I'm working on. I realize that somebody recently asked if there was an audio Youtube out there ... but I'm hoping for something easier to search and of a generally higher audio quality.

Do you know about sounddogs? Free samples... nominal fee for CD quality.

Response by poster: All good links here ... but FreeSound wins "best answer" because they have the right name.
